Enjoy Blue-Ribbon, Trophy-Fishing at Flaming Gorge, Green River and Mountain Wilderness

This 5-day itinerary describes options for fishing Flaming Gorge Reservoir, the Green River, high mountain lake and stream fishing in the Ashley National Forest and High Uintas Wilderness, or a combination of all these activities.

Trip Summary

Travel from Salt Lake City to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in three-and-a-half hours and start fishing! Enjoy three more days of fishing. Return to Salt Lake City while making stops to see some sights.

The Flaming Gorge region offers anglers one of the most diverse fisheries in the world.  Hundreds of waters and millions of hungry fish are waiting for you!  

Year-round fishing opportunities are great on Flaming Gorge. This region is so beautiful it’s designated a national recreation area and administered by the Forest Service.

Three Ways to Fish

1. Flaming Gorge Reservoir

Great fishing all year! Up to 50 pound trout + many other species.

2. Green River — below Flaming Gorge Dam

A world-renowned trout fishery! Year-round fishing.

3. High-mountain lake and stream fishing

600 natural mountain lakes and their streams!

Getting Here

Starting in: Salt Lake City (Wasatch Front)

Distance to Area: 208 miles, (between 3 and 4 hours).

Total Driving over five days:  490 miles, (approximately 10 hours).

Roads:  I-15 to I-80 to Wyoming hwy 414 and to Utah state Routes 43, 44, and U.S. 191.

Most driving required:  Getting there and back on Day 1 and Day 5. Expect a maximum of four hours of driving each day unless you choose optional side trips on the return.

Hotels and resorts at Manila, Dutch John and around the lake. Houseboats and water cabins are available at Lucerne marina.

A Utah fishing license. Available at the marinas, local stores and online. 

Some fishing guides require a Wyoming stamp because some of the lake is in Wyoming.

National Recreation Area or National Parks Pass

You must display a pass on your dashboard or hang it from your rear view mirror.  Parking at the marinas, boat launching areas or near the Green River require either the purchase of a Flaming Gorge NRA pass or display of a National Park Inter-agency, Senior, Access or Active Military pass. 

Buy Flaming Gorge NRA passes at marinas, stores, the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitors Center and at the Flaming Gorge Ranger Office in Manila. (Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) 25 West, Hwy 43. Daily pass $5, seven consecutive day pass is $15.  The Ranger office also sells all the National park passes.  Failure to buy and display a pass may result in a $75 citation.
