Extending Your Trip: The Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area
If you are traveling from out of state, maximize your trip by exploring Central and Southern Utah. The area spans over 400 miles of scenic highways connecting historic pioneer towns with Utah's iconic Mighty 5 national parks. Here are some highlights:
- Scenic Byway 12 & Escalante Canyon: Dubbed one of America's most beautiful drives, this highway winds past slot canyons, slickrock domes, and the historic Ebenezer Bryce Cabin built in 1881.
- Bryce Canyon National Park: Famous for its thousands of brilliant red, red-orange, and pink sandstone pillars (hoodoos). Pioneer Ebenezer Bryce famously described this striking landscape as "a hell of a place to lose a cow."
- Capitol Reef National Park (Town of Fruita): Tucked inside a massive red rock fold, you can walk through an isolated 19th-century pioneer settlement, view ancient petroglyphs and pick fresh fruit from historic orchards.
- Sanpete Valley (Little Denmark): Drive along Highway 89 through towns like Manti and Spring City (which is entirely listed on the National Register of Historic Places) to experience beautifully preserved Scandinavian pioneer architecture, local artisan shops, and stunning mountain views.
- Mystic Hot Springs: Located in the Sevier Valley, this unique desert oasis features mineral-rich, 168-degree water channeling into natural travertine pools and vintage soaking tubs—originally enjoyed by nomadic Paiute tribes and early pioneer travelers alike.
