Donut Falls

Looking for a family-friendly hike with spectacular views that won’t disappoint? Look no further than Donut Falls. This short and easy hike is approximately 26 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and ends with a beautiful waterfall that flows through a circular donut-shaped rock formation.

Trail Guide

Distance: The trail is approximately 0.8 miles to the falls from the trailhead. 

Elevation gain: 200-300 feet.

Difficulty: Easy, making it suitable for families and hikers of all skill levels. 

Trail type: Out-and-back. 

Trail uses: Hiking.

Dogs: Not allowed. 

Fees: There is a $10 parking fee.

Seasonality: Trailhead is gated during winter, extending the trail length. 

Best season to hike: Summer through early autumn.

Bathrooms: There are restrooms and pit toilets at the trailhead.

Parking: There are two parking areas: one near the trailhead and another larger lot further down Big Cottonwood Canyon Road. Park in the larger lot if the smaller is full, and this will add about 2 miles to your hike. 

Pro Tip: The area near the falls can be wet and slippery, so wear appropriate footwear like hiking sandals or water-resistant boots.

Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast or planning your first hike with the kids, Donut Falls is a must-visit. Enjoy the lush greenery of Big Cottonwood Canyon as you make your way to the falls. Once you’re there, you can view the falls from within via a natural rock archway, splash around in the shallow creek and even explore a small cave. It’s the perfect place to cool down after a summer hike. Afterward, take your pick from a delicious selection of nearby restaurants, including Silver Fork Lodge and Restaurant, Porcupine Pub & Grille or Honeycomb Grill. 

Find It

Drive 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the Mill D Trailhead and take a right towards the Jordan Pines picnic area. You'll pass private summer homes on your way to the trailhead parking lot and then simply follow the signs to Donut Falls.
