Fish Creek Reservoir (Great Western Trail)

The Great Western Trail traverses some 4,455 miles from Canada to Mexico, including a major section through Utah. It’s the longest multiple-use trail system in the world, and braids together trails for both motorized and nonmotorized users. On Boulder Mountain, the Great Western Trail heads south from Torrey through the forest, up Fish Creek drainage, and eventually to the trail’s highest point in Utah, Boulder Top.

Start this jaunt at the Fish Creek trailhead. It’s a meandering hike, but the spot is also popular for ATV and OHV riders. Head south through epic scenery, where evergreen is pitted next to aspen and other color-changing shrubs. Continue on to Fish Creek Reservoir. While the colors are spectacular on the trees, so are they in the water. This is one of the top spots for fishing, so hook into hungry fish — typically brook trout, but also rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, tiger trout, splake, and grayling.
