RAIL TRANSPORT

Experienced travelers say Amtrak's California Zephyr, which runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco, is one of the most beautiful train trips on Amtrak’s national system — perhaps in all of North America. From Chicago, the Zephyr's course runs west, turning south through the plains of Nebraska to Denver, across the Rockies to Salt Lake City, and then through Reno and Sacramento into Emeryville/San Francisco.

Reserve a coach seat for your journey, or a roomette or bedroom in one of the Superliner sleeping cars for more luxurious travel. Amtrak Utah serves unstaffed train stations at Green River, Helper, and Provo, Utah, and a staffed station in Salt Lake City. Eastbound, the California Zephyr arrives in Salt Lake City at roughly 3 a.m. Westbound, the train arrives at roughly 11 p.m. The staffed station in Salt Lake is at the capital city's intermodal hub, which connects the Amtrak station with Greyhound and UTA Trax, the Wasatch Front's lightrail service. There is also a GREENbike bike share station, if you're traveling light.
