Living Planet Aquarium: Visit the Ocean Explorer exhibit and find yourself "under water" as you journey through the 40-foot shark tunnel with sharks, sea turtles and sting rays swimming inches away: through 3.5 inches of a 26,000-pound acrylic tunnel, to be precise. The "Journey to South America" is a transporting walk through an aquatic-themed rainforest ecosystem with 10-foot anacondas, alligators and piranha. It doesn't end there as additional ecosystems can be experienced side by side like never before: Discover Utah will you get you up close to some of Utah's treasured wildlife and endangered species, while the Antarctic Adventure will take you to the distant Falkland Islands ecosystem to experience some very unique research opportunities.
12033 S Lone Peak Pkwy, Draper, Utah, (801) 355-3474, open daily year-round.

Tracy Aviary maintains a collection of over 400 birds representing about 135 species. Come see the $1.1 million Destination Argentina! exhibit and flamingos, guira kookoos, red crested cardinals, elegant crested tinamou and the always playful monk parakeets. The Kennecott Wetland Immersion Experience introduces you to a critical ecosystem in Utah, a stretch of ecologically diverse wetlands near the Great Salt Lake that fulfills critical habitat needs for some 7 million birds annually. Additional exhibits include The King of the Andes and The Owl Forest, all in the heart of one of Salt Lake's most prized urban park settings.
589 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City (Southwest corner of Liberty Park), (801) 322-BIRD, open daily year-round.

Utah's Hogle Zoo: Located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon since 1931, the zoo is SLC's top paid attraction. Spread out over 42 acres of hillside, meandering tree-covered pathways guide the visitor on a discovery of nature. Housing more than 800 animals from hundreds of species, it is recognized as one of the top zoos in the world. Be sure to visit Asian Highlands, a re-creation of a Himalayan village featuring five endangered Asian cat species, and Elephant Encounter — where the Serengeti meets Salt Lake City — and spotlights African elephants and white rhinoceros.
