Filmed in Utah

You may or may not have been to Utah, but chances are you've seen Utah on the big screen, television, and print magazines all over the world. More than 800 films and TV movies have been filmed in the Beehive State. Hollywood first discovered Utah in the 1920's when films like Stagecoach were filmed in the southern part of the state. Since then, Utah has been the backdrop for hundreds of films, such as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "Thelma & Louise," "High School Musical" and "Pirates of Caribbean: At Worlds End."

Since John Ford's westerns immortalized the area in the late 1940's, movie-makers have been an ongoing fixture in Southern Utah. The Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission is the longest ongoing film commission in the world. A variety of films from John Wayne classics to 1994's City Slickers II, have been shot with a backdrop of remote redrock buttes, mesas, and twisting canyons. It was near Canyonlands' Island in the Sky District - not the Grand Canyon, as most people assume - that Thelma and Louise took their final leap, and it was in Arches National Park that a young Indiana Jones discovered the Cross of Cortez in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Recent Hollywood productions that "wrapped" in Utah include Gravity, Age of Extinction, The Saratov Approach, Inspired Guns, The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin, 108 Stitches, Sorrow, and Need for Speed.

Visit the Utah Film Commission's Filmed in Utah page for a list of movies shot in the state. And check back for recently released and "coming soon" features.
